SUMMARY ONLY CHAPTER FOUR SRI LANKA CAUSES Citizenship rights (Ceylon Citizenship Act) - The CCA granted citizenship to those who were born or ancestors were born in Sri Lanka. - Many Tamils became stateless even when India tried to help. LINK: Tamils still contributed to society but they din have citizenship, so they were ANGRY! University Admission -Tamils had to score higher compared to the Sinhalese to enter uni. -There was also a fixed Sinhalese placing in the unis. -More Sinhalese were able to get into medical/engineering courses thus getting better jobs. -The system was not based on merit. LINK: Tamils felt it was unfair as Sinhalese had better chances of getting good jobs, so they also very ANGRY Resettlement Policy -The goverment resettled Sinhalese into Tamil areas to increase the Sinhalese %. -Tamils had to fight for jobs, land and had to adjust to different cultures. LINK: Tamils felt that the Sinhalese were intruding into their areas and thus got ANGRY! Language Policy (Sinhala=Offical language) -The Tamils could not get govt jobs easily as they did not know Sinhala. -Civil servants would be dismissed if they din learn Sinhala in 3 years. LINK:The Tamils felt that this was unfair as they should not be forced to learn a new language just to get a job so they very ANGRY again. Consequences Political Armed conflict -LTTE formed as peaceful demands din work. -A lot ppl hurt. Foregin Intervention -India wanted to help the Tamils. (theres abit more on this actually) Economic (This is simple) Tourism fell Investors din want to invest Unemployment -Tamil businesses were destroyed in conflict, but the Sinhalese were also affected as they held jobs at these places. (Thus all were affected) Social Large scale-displacement -The tamils scared of the confict and thus ran to India. NORTHERN IRELAND Causes Divided Loyalities -Protestants want Britian, Catholics want Ireland LINK: They didn't want to compromise and thus ANGRY Education -Protestant and Catholic students brought up in their own ways LINK: Didn't interact,grew up hostile against each other, thus had conflict. Employment -Protestant easily employed than Catholics. LINK: Catholics felt unfair, ANGRY Housing -Priority to Protestants first. LINK: Catholics had to wait longer, frustrated then ANGRY. Voting(household=2 votes)(bigger companies=more votes) -Protestant got alot companies so got more votes. LINK: Catholics scared protestants will come into power so ANGRY (the thing was unfair too) Consequences Social -Innocents died. -People prejudiced agaisnt each other because of their education. (lead to more violence) Political -Catholics had civil right marches and pressure from Brit govt led to the voting system being ABOLISHED Economic(see same again) -Tourism down -Investors dont want come BACKGROUND: Catholics had civil rights march. Brit army (was mainly Protestants)welcomed by them but when they came to fight the march, Cats din trust them liao. Protestants also petrol-bomb Cat houses coz of march. So Cats very angry right?
